Back in April, I talked in one of these posts about Mad Men and the problems season 1 brought up about masculinist texts as period pieces. Season 2 began recently, and I felt a short update was due. Mad Men is not a "genre" show. It's a fairly straightforward drama about the advertising industry in the early 1960s. And it's written with a patina of sarcasm, as smoking, drinking, racism, homophobia, and sexism are all shown as normative to the time while emphasizing these post-millennial no-nos exponentially more than they were in true '60s-era ( Read more... )

Is Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles feminist? Surface-wise, yes. What determines whether something is feminist or not? In genre fiction, that often comes down to whether or not the women in the story kick lots of ass, usually literally and often metaphorically. ( Essay cut due to spoilers for the whole series, except for the episode that ran Monday which I haven't seen yet. No spoilers for unaired material, though. )
